Everybody wants to work and be independent. But sometimes we need
a little help. We’re lucky in Canada that there is a pretty
comprehensive social net to help see us through the hard times.
Federal Resources
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada is the main federal
government agency the deals with income supplements. These include:
disability benefits, employment insurance, federal worker's compensation;
grants and contributions, international benefits, low-income subsidies,
public pensions and retirement, survivor benefits, and training
and learning assistance. Visit their site at http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/gateways/individuals/cluster/fb.shtml
for more information, or contact the local office.

Provincial Resources
The Province also offers income support. The Ministry of Community
and Social Services provides income and employment supports to Ontario
residents who are most in need. Their main programs are the Ontario
Works, and the Ontario Disability Support Program. See their website
at http://www.cfcs.gov.on.ca/CFCS/en/programs/IES/default.htm
for more information.
The District of Timiskaming Social Services Administration Board
is likely the best place to start if you want to learn more about
services available in the Kirkland Lake specifically. The DSSAB
supports the development of healthy and self-sufficient communities
through the innovative and responsive delivery of children's services,
community housing, emergency medical services and social assistance.
