They have information on available jobs, job search techniques, student employment, etc. HRSDC also has a number of programs in effect that can be accessed to improve your job prospects, as well as information on programs designed to help or encourage employers to hire people.

Placement Services

ON-SITE: A program that matches Canadian firms and institutions with university or college graduates in a range of disciplines - for up to six months - at low cost.

CAREER EDGE: A private sector not-for-profit organization founded by Canadian employers offering 6, 9, or 12 month internships to recent graduates of university, college and high school. The Career Edge internship program benefits employers and youth. It is a great way for Canadian organizations to access bright, well-educated, young people at a cost lower than full time recruitment. Graduates gain access to leading Canadian organizations and get the experience they need to develop their chosen careers. It is also an opportunity for both the organization and the Intern to “test the waters” prior to a permanent job offer which ultimately helps to develop Canada’s future talent pool.

Employee Rights

Wondering what your rights and obligations are in today’s workplace? Visit http://ips.iwin.ca/english/useful_info_e.cfm. They provide a directory of sites that address such issues as occupational health and safety, labour relations, etc.  Another helpful site is the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada site. See: www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/gateways/business/menu.shtml#labour

Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills or test the waters of a potential new career. One of the best sources of information on available volunteering opportunities is the NEOVol.org. This is a web portal aimed at volunteers and the voluntary sector organizations. It serves as a way for voluntary sector organizations to recruit volunteers, for organizations to receive Internet recognition and for sharing of information between organizations. It is also to give volunteers a place to go to search for a volunteer opportunity, to share information with other volunteers and to find out information about voluntary sector organizations in their community. See: http://www.neovol.org/forpat/timnavigate.cfm

Job Search Resources

http://ips.iwin.ca: A bilingual web site providing access to a comprehensive searchable database of local, provincial and federal employment programs and services, the IPS is an invaluable tool to assist job seekers, employment service providers, community agencies and the public.
