The provincial government sets property taxes.
A not-for-profit organization, the Municipal Property Assessment
Corporation) classifies all property in Ontario, assesses its value,
and provides the findings to municipal governments. Municipal governments
in turn, determine and apply tax rates set by their councils to
the assessment of each property according to the property’s tax
class (i.e. residential, multi-residential, commercial, industrial,
pipe line, farm and managed forests). The money collected is used
to fund municipal services and support education.
