The Kirkland Lake business community numbers over
300 enterprises. Most are small and medium sized businesses, employing
10 people or less. These are primarily in the retail and service
sector. Kirkland Lake Gold Inc., the Department of Veteran’s Affairs,
the Kirkland and District Hospital and the municipal government
are among the largest in terms of the number of people employed.
"Blue-collar" jobs account for around 50% of employment.
Increasingly however, these are skilled positions capitalizing on
the high level of post-secondary technical training held by the
local labour force. "White-collar" employment has grown
substantially since the late 1990's, and now accounts for about
30% of local employment. This reflects the growth of the professional
services sector, specifically in education, health, government and
social services. It also reflects KL’s position as the business
and administrative centre of the northern Temiskaming region.
Kirkland Lake was historically a gold mining town.
Today however, the local economy enjoys a greater degree of diversification
than ever before, as forestry, tourism, environmental services,
and professional services have increased in importance.
