Dear Council:

Community Living Kirkland Lake has been providing supports and services to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families for the past 61 years.  Community Living Ontario, in an effort to raise awareness for the need for inclusion and to increase public understanding and acceptance of people with developmental disabilities, have once again declared the month of May, Community Living Month.

The purpose of this letter is to request Kirkland Lake Town Council’s support in this effort by officially declaring May 2008, Community Living Month.  You could assist us in this awareness promotion by flying our Community Living flag for the month of May at the Town Hall. We would like to attend a council meeting at the end of April to do a small presentation to council and to have May 2008 declared as Community Living Month.

This year’s activities to promote the campaign include the following:

1-    Basketball Challenge (Katimavik Volunteers Vs Special Olympic Athletes). The admission fee for this event will be one non perishable food item. We will then donate this food to the Salvation Army Food Bank.

2-    We will donate a book for the Children’s library and a DVD for adults to the Teck Centennial Library and asking that they promote community awareness by distributing bookmarks to patrons.

4- We have an ad coming up in the Northern News for Community Pride

5- We have requested that Community Living flags will once again fly over       Government Road during the month of May.

6- Presentation about our agency will be made to some local service clubs if                requested.

7- We will have a representative speak about our Awareness Campaign on the            radio.

We in partnership with the Katimavik Volunteer group will be hosting a Talent Show at our CLS building on 4 Tweedsmuir on Thursday May 15/08 starting at 7pm. This evening will include music and light refreshments. We extend an invitation to Town Council to attend this event in order to learn more about our agency.

We appreciate your support over the years and thank you in advance for taking the time to review this letter.

Yours sincerely,

Dennis Perrault
